Typically, a home's original mantel is the contractor's after-thought, an obligatory feature in the builder's scope, and the customer has not given much thought to its style and detailing. For the Eckels, MapleTree created a unique replacement mantel, housing the center channel speaker of the surround-sound system. The grill in the center allows the sound to pass through. The upper mantel frames the plasma television, with hidden lighting above, to illuminate the mantel when the television is not in use.
